Sputniks round 1

Saturday  18 March 2023 saw a team of 43 swimmers and our coaches Pete and Graham travel to Macclesfield Leisure Centre to compete in round 1 of Sputniks. We saw some fantastic swimming, for many of our swimmers competing it was their first away gala. Everyone competing did scorpions proud.

The first race saw our 10 and 11 year olds taking to the pool for the 100 IM, for the age 10s girls Freya Pilkington got gold, Jessie Ford in 4th and Charlotte Rucklidge and Olivia Plant finished in the top 10. In the boys, Ethan Beran finished in 4th, with Coby Fell, Zach Pilkington and Niall Dooley finishing in the top 10. For the age 11’s Adam Fildes and Ilysia Blackburn got top 10 finishes.  All our swimmers who competed in this race achieved pb’s which is fantastic.

Next, we saw the 8 and 9 year olds competed, Aurita Sakirov and Edward Keys both getting bronze in the age 8 25m freestyle, followed closely behind by Thomas Ford and Adam Brown in 5th and 6th. The 9-year-olds saw 6th place finishes off Hattie Stokey and Sidney Byrne. Again, everyone who swam got PBs, and many others getting times for this event for the first time.

The 10 and 11 year olds returned to the pool for 50m free style, our 10 year olds storming in with Freya getting another 1st place, Jessie with another 4th and Olivia in the top 10. Ethan Beran got 2nd place, Niall Doody and Archie Lister-Gibbons getting top 10 finishes. In the 11-age category Sophie O’Connell came in 4th place and Ilysia Blackburn in 7th, Adam Fildes came in 6th place in the boy’s event. Again, we saw PBs across the board along with many of our swimmers getting a time in this event for the first time.

We were back to the individual IM, our 8 and 9 year olds. For our 8 year olds Edward Keys got silver closely followed by Thomas Ford in bronze. Aurita Sakirov got another bronze. Next our 9 year olds Hattie Stokey finishing in 6th place and Ted Jones in 5th place and Ruben in 10th place. Again this event saw all our swimmers get PBs or get times for the first time in this event.

The final events were the breaststroke, firstly our 10 and 11 year olds swam 50m, in the 10’s Freya Pilkington getting her 3rd gold of the night, Sophie O’Connell got another top 10 finish.  We saw top 10 finishes for Archie and Ethan. The 11 year olds Charlie Morton came in 4th place, Adam Fildes, Harry Brosnihan and Joshua Ash Flanagan all got top 10 finishes.  Next, we saw the 8 and 9 year olds swim 25m breaststroke, in the 8 year olds Edward Keys got gold and Aurita Sakirov getting her final bronze of the night. In our 9 year olds Hattie Stokey came in 4th and Holly Buckby, Jack Moore and Sidney Byrne finishing in the top 10. Yet again we saw a huge amount PBs which is fantastic.

Sputniks always finishes off with a relay and this week it was the medley relay, we were able to enter 5 teams into age 10/11 relay and 4 teams into the 8/9 relays. Everyone swam brilliantly with some great change overs.

There was real team sprit on the poolside it was a brilliant night for Scorpions with so many pbs and it also being many of our swimmers first away gala. Our coaches Pete and Graham did a brilliant job poolside. We will see you all for round 2.
