The Wilmslow Scorpions Performance Squad (previously known as Scorpions Elite Squad)
Background
Some time ago, Hilary Centeleghe (our home Referee, Racecraft coach and now Team Manager) and Paul Ibeziako (the clubs previous Chairman) talked about moving our swimmers up a gear to compete at higher level galas than they were currently and to ultimately achieve Paul’s dream of getting a Wilmslow Scorpions swimmer to the Olympics! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, and so Hilary had the ambition to take a number of swimmers to the County Championships. She has identified a number of swimmers from the recent Club Champs that she would like to help develop into a high performance competitive squad, with an initial target of competing at the Cheshire County Championships, but then progress to Regional's and potentially National's.
The Performance Squad
Under Hilary’s direction a number of swimmers were identified and categorised as having potential by the following classifications:
County Squad (those who already have times that would qualify for the Cheshire’s in that particular age group)
County Potential Squad (those that are very near the qualifying time)
Futures Squad (these are some of the current 9-year olds showing potential)
These squads fall under the banner of the Performance Squad.
The introduction of these squads is very exciting for the club and this needs the collaboration of all the coaches, the swimmers and parents as it requires coordinated commitment. It also featured in the clubs 3 year strategic document produced in 2016, which coaches, parents and members all wanted for the club.
Joining the Squad
At each club champs or indeed any other gala we will try to identify potential swimmers to add to the squad.
The Cheshire County - qualifying galas
After a brilliant start at the North Midlands gala we’re already achieving so much more than anticipated with the following swimmers gaining Cheshire County qualifying times - Joseph Mortlock (50 fly & 100 breast), Oliver Mortlock (100 breast), Heidi Stansfield (100 IM, 50 Free & 50 Fly) and Susie Moores (50m Free & 50m Fly) and some very near Cheshire County Championship Qualifiers (just pipped due to the newly announced age restriction/eligibility).
The next meet to target is the Satellites Last Chance Qualifier on the 9th & 16th December

Club Championships Results 2023
Scorpions did it! We are overall joint champions, Joint Junior champions and runner up in the seniors.
The fourth and final round took place on Saturday 17th June.
Don't forget to sign up for the Club Championships. Closing date is Friday 16th June.
Round 2 took place on Saturday 22nd April, 28 swimmers attended the gala with our coaches Pete and Graham. Yet again we saw some fantastic swimming, everyone competing did scorpions proud. Sputniks round 1 consisted of breaststroke and freestyle, which means round 2 was backstroke and butterfly along with another IM.
The 2022/23 season of the peaks and plains swimming league has now come to an end, with Wilmslow scorpions finishing in second place. An amazing performance off all our swimmers guided by our head coach Simon and coach Steph.
Saturday  18 March 2023 saw a team of 43 swimmers and our coaches Pete and Graham travel to Macclesfield Leisure Centre to compete in round 1 of Sputniks. We saw some fantastic swimming, for many of our swimmers competing it was their first away gala. Everyone competing did scorpions proud.
Saturday 11th March saw Wilmslow scorpions take to the pool for the second year participating in British Long Distance Swimming Association distance swim.
Good luck to our swimmers going to Macclesfield this weekend to swim in the Cheshire County Championships 2023. Delighted that we have 5 swimmers who qualified and are representing Wilmslow Scorpions as well as a few dual club swimmers.
